Distinguished and Famous people from Orroroo Carrieton
📖 Rex Ingamells
Rex Ingamells was born at Orroroo in 1913, the son of a Methodist minister whose postings took the family to several South Australian towns. Teaching, publishing work and poetry followed university study. He became the principal advocate of the Jindyworobak movement, arguing that Australian writing should respond more closely to its own environment and Aboriginal cultures. The programme generated argument as well as support, and its approach to Indigenous material requires critical reading today. Orroroo marks the beginning of a career spent debating what Australian literature should sound like and where it should find its subjects.
🎹 Hooper Brewster-Jones
Hooper Brewster-Jones was born at Black Rock Plain in 1887 and learned music from his schoolteacher father before studying in Adelaide. An Elder Scholarship took him to the Royal College of Music in London. Returning to South Australia, he taught, composed, performed and organised an orchestra that continued through the First World War. His musical family’s later generations included Rick and John Brewster of the Angels, a connection linking concert halls with a rather louder branch of Australian performance. His district birthplace precedes a career whose influence was felt chiefly through Adelaide’s musical institutions and audiences.
🧭 Kevin Rasheed
Kevin Rasheed was born at Orroroo in 1919 and attended Carrieton Public School. Depression and drought damaged the family’s pastoral interests, and he left school at fifteen to help his father drove sheep. Work at Whyalla and wartime air-force service preceded the tourism venture for which he became known: developing the Wilpena Chalet into a much larger operation. He promoted the Flinders Ranges with enthusiasm, even appearing in television productions and car advertisements filmed there. Orroroo and Carrieton supply his childhood, schooling and early pastoral work, before he helped introduce a wider travelling public to the ranges.
